Study in Canada
Congratulations on the beginning of your journey to Canada. This write-up contains several steps to studying in Canada. Ensure you follow them carefully without skipping anything. Your visa success will depend on following these instructions. This guide is COMPLETELY FREE.
FOR YOUR ADMISSION:
1. Course choice: You need to first decide upon what you wish to study in Canada. These courses must be related to your previous academic experience. They should not be easily available in your home country.
To find an institution that offers your program, simply google “Program + province”, Example MSc Biomedical Sciences Manitoba”. You will find institutions in a province offering your program.
Before settling for an institution, ensure it is Postgraduate work permit (PGWP) eligible. A PGWP is your key to staying back in Canada upon graduation. Click here to confirm your institution.
2. Academic credentials: If you wish to study a Master’s degree, or a postgraduate certificate/diploma program, you would need your academic transcript. If you are applying to study a Bachelor’s program, you will only need your High school certificate.
(A) For applicants with low GPA/Diploma/HND Holders: If you are a BSC holder, some Canadian institutions do evaluate the last 2 years of your academic transcript, meaning you could stand a chance for Masters even with a 2nd class lower degree. However, there is no way to guess which universities they are, here are some institutions to try: University of Canada west, Crandall university, University of New Brunswick, Memorial University, Thompson University, University of Prince Edward Island. Should your GPA be too low, or you have an HND/Diploma, you should consider applying for a Postgraduate certificate/Postgraduate diploma program.
(B) For Bachelor program applicants who desire institutions that accept GCE/NECO results, click here
3. International passport: Your international passport must be valid for at least 2 years when you begin your application. Have plans to renew it ASAP.
4. Passport photograph in white background: Take a passport photo on white background. Have a softcopy for future use.
5. Resume: This should contain your contact information, work experience, and academic experience. Click here if you desire assistance with revamping your resume + LinkedIn + Indeed into Canadian format.
6. Statement of purpose: This document shows your study intent. Most institutions don’t require SOPs, but it is very important to add one to your study permit (visa) application. A good SOP should talk about who you are, your academic and work experience, why you want to study in Canada, why you are choosing the institution, and your plans after school (most important). Click here if you desire assistance with writing an SOP.
7. English test: Most Canadian institutions usually waive this if you were taught in the English language or are from an English-speaking country. But if you are a Nigerian, there is a special platform for Nigerians called Nigerian student Express (NSE). NSE is a platform you use to apply for your study permit (immediately after admission). IELTS is mandatory under the NSE platform, whether or not it was required for your admission.
An optimum IELTS score for NSE is:
Reading: 6 | Writing: 6 | Listening: 6 | Speaking: 6 |
For NSE, you can choose to write IELTS General or IELTS Academic (We recommend IELTS General in this case). It costs up to 260 Canadian dollars to schedule an IELTS Test. Click here to schedule an IELTS test in your home country. We highly recommend that you prepare for at least a month before sitting for an IELTS test.
Final note: If you think IELTS is too much of a hassle, then you can opt out of the Nigerian Student Express and focus on the regular study permit application. Please remember that the regular study permit application can be extremely slow.
8. For research programs: Most research-based MSc programs would require you to have a Supervisor from the institution you are applying to + Your Bachelor thesis (your project report) + Research proposal + 1-2 Academic references. Click here to use this simple guide on how to reach out to a research supervisor.
AFTER YOUR ADMISSION IS OUT (YOUR VISA REQUIREMENTS):
1. Tuition + Living cost: Most institutions in Canada would require that you pay your tuition deposit immediately your admission is out. Some don’t. But we highly recommend having your tuition ahead of time.
(A) Average tuition: From 13,000 CAD to 34,000 CAD per year for regular programs. Specialized programs like MBA, Pharmacy, and Drug discovery may cost more. Some Canadian institutions allow installment tuition payments. They are: the University of Calgary (click here), University of Victoria (click here), University of Manitoba (click here), Wilfrid Laurier University (click here), McGill University (click here), University of Northern British Columbia (click here), Queens University (click here), Tyndale University (click here).
(B) Living cost: In addition to tuition fees, you must also show proof of living costs for Canada. This must be in your bank statement. The living cost for Canada is on IRCC’s website. Canada usually requires a 6month bank statement for most countries. If you belong to an SDS Country, you can use a Guaranteed Investment Certificate in place of a Bank statement.
(C) If you are a Nigerian and applying to study in Canada through the Nigerian Student Express (NSE), you don’t need to scratch your head about the amount to show in your bank statement. IRCC has benchmarked the standard amount for an international student from Nigeria to be 30,000 CAD (Covering tuition + Living costs). Should you wish to add any family member to your application, use this IRCC guide to know what to add to your account per family member.
(D) Lacking funds to study: You can try (i) Crowdfunding (ii) Loans from reputable agencies in your home country (iii) Scholarships: Most institutions offer entrance-based scholarships in form of tuition discounts. You could also explore general scholarship websites or scholarships from the Government, Oil firms, Multinational organizations, and Philanthropists in your home country.
2. Ties to your home country: You need to show ties to your home country. This can be in form of landed properties in your name + registered business in your name + letter of employment + unaccompanying immediate family members (spouse and/or kids). If you have a close relative ready to gift you a land, then contact your lawyer to process a “Gift deed” or “Deed of assignment” for you.
If you must use a sponsor, it has to be your parent (if you are single) or your spouse (if you are married), and the sponsor must provide the ties listed above. Anyone outside this would reduce your approval chances.
3. Medical examination: You would need to undergo a medical examination in one of the IRCC-approved medical centers in your home country. If you have accompanying family members, they must undergo a medical examination as well. It’s advisable to book ahead of time, even during your admission process. We call this “upfront medicals”. You will be required to pay up to 140 CAD for your medical examination. Check this list for approved medical centers in your country.
4. Online study permit application portal: You can submit your application on the old portal here or Click here to use the new portal. For the new portal, you may require an invite code. Click here to get an invite code.
5. Biometrics: Once you submit your study permit application online, in a few days-weeks, you will receive an email instruction from IRCC to go do your biometrics (fingerprint). Biometrics is mandatory if your fingerprints have not been captured for any Canadian application within the last 10years.
You would need to pay the sum of 85 CAD before or at the biometrics center when the time comes. Biometrics costs 170 CAD per family.
6. Travel history: Your approval chances are high if you have traveled to any developed country in the past, such as to Visiting the USA, Canada, The UK or Any Schengen country, studied in Russia or Worked in Dubai for several years. Any other travel experience outside these would not hold much weight. We have seen folks get approval without travel history (usually because they have solid finances + home ties), but we always recommend having it.
7. Getting an Approval: Once your biometrics and all other process have been completed, ensure to monitor your email and online portal for updates. Should your study permit be approved, you will receive a Passport Request (PPR) email with instructions on where to send your passport for a visa stamp. With that, welcome to Canada!
HIGHLIGHT OF WHAT YOU WOULD SPEND:

Study in Canada for minors
This post is to assist parents who wish to apply for a study permit for their children to Canada. This post serves as a guide for minors traveling alone or with their parents to Canada.
WHO IS A MINOR?
Each province and territory decides the age when a person becomes an adult. Any child below the ages below is regarded as a minor:
- Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan classifies an adult to be someone 18 years old and above.
- British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, and Yukon classify an adult as someone 19 years old and above.
WHY IS A STUDY PERMIT IMPORTANT FOR MINORS?
Most parents will prefer to apply for a visitor visa for their accompanying children and later apply for a study permit from within Canada after arrival. This is a good option and it helps lessen the financial burden of providing additional proof of funds for the child.
However, having a study permit means, if the minor wants to, they may be able to stay longer in Canada with their parents, remain in school when they’re no longer a minor, get a secondary school co-op work permit, and have access to social services in some provinces or territories.
WHO NEEDS A STUDY PERMIT TO CANADA?
Minor children who want to study in Canada must apply for a study permit before they enter Canada. This includes minor children who come with parents who already have a valid study or work permit.
WHO DOES NOT NEED A STUDY PERMIT TO CANADA?
- Minor children visiting Canada do not need a study permit to Canada. However, if they wish to study later, they need to apply for a study permit within or outside Canada.
- Minors who are citizens of countries that do not require visas to Canada can enter Canada using their valid passports. At the port of entry, they will be issued visitor records. However, if they wish to study later, they need to apply for a study permit within or outside Canada. Click here to know the countries that do not require visas to Canada.
- Minor children who are already in Canada may study without a study permit:
(a) if the minor child wants to go to preschool, kindergarten, or primary or secondary school and has a parent who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
(b) if the minor child is a refugee or refugee claimant and has a parent who is a refugee or refugee claimant
(c) if the minor child came to Canada as a visitor for a course or program of studies of 6 months or less
(d) if the minor child will study in a course or program of 6 months or less
(e) if the minor child has a parent (biological or adoptive) who is a work permit holder or study permit holder, the parent is not physically in Canada, the parent is in Canada on a business visitor visa, or the parent is authorized to work in Canada without a work permit.
WHO NEEDS AN ACCEPTANCE LETTER FROM AN INSTITUTION TO STUDY IN CANADA?
An acceptance letter from a high school or elementary school in Canada is required for certain minors before they can apply for a study permit, whether they are in Canada or not. Click here to find a school and apply for admission for your child.
- Minors who are NOT YET in Canada (but will be coming to Canada with parents who have a valid study or work permit) don’t need to provide a letter of acceptance when applying for a study permit from OUTSIDE of Canada.
- Minors who are NOT YET in Canada and are traveling alone will need a letter of acceptance when applying for a study permit from OUTSIDE of Canada.
- Minors ALREADY IN CANADA and applying to study FROM WITHIN CANADA will need a letter of acceptance even if they’re in Canada with a family member who already has a work permit or study permit.
DO I NEED TO PAY TUITION FEES FOR MY CHILD?
If the child is exempt from a study permit, they are usually exempt from tuition fees as well. Nonetheless, double-check with the local school board as their policy could be different.
Minor children who need a study permit from within Canada may have to pay tuition fees. Also, bursary or scholarship is rarely available to minor children. You may give it a try, but it is less likely you get a scholarship or bursary.
HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDY PERMIT FOR A MINOR CHILD WITHIN OR OUTSIDE CANADA
1. Have an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution in Canada. See the scenarios above to confirm if your minor child needs an acceptance letter or not. Click here to find a school and apply for admission for your child.
2. Have your tuition fee ready. Some schools may require you to pay all or part of your tuition fee before an acceptance letter is sent. Tuition ranges from $9,500 to $17,000 per year for public schools, $15,000 to $30,000 per year for private/independent day schools, and $63,000 to $83,000 per year for private/independent boarding schools.
3. Besides tuition, schools may also charge small fees for activities, such as: sports teams, clubs, field trips, etc. Most students bring their own lunch to school. Some schools offer cafeterias or hot lunch programs where a student may purchase a meal.
4. Proof of funds: There is no specified amount in one’s bank statement for Minors applying to study from within Canada. However, I recommend Minors applying from outside Canada to show at least $10,000 CAD as proof of funds, whether they are traveling alone or accompanying a parent/guardian. This amount is separate from tuition fees and only covers their living expenses for 1 year. Click here to know the CAD dollar equivalent in your local currency.
5. Custodianship documents: A minor child traveling alone requires a custodian in Canada. A custodian is a responsible adult, who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. To appoint a custodian, click here to download the Custodianship Declaration form, fill it and upload it along with the minor child’s study permit application. The 2 pages of the form look similar, but the first page needs to be signed by the custodian in Canada and notarized by a lawyer or notary in Canada. The second page needs to be signed by the parents or legal guardians of the minor child and notarized in their home country.
6. Passport biodata page and passport photo.
7. You can submit your study permit application on the old portal here, or Click here to use the new portal. For the new portal, you may require an invite code. Click here to get an invite code.
8. Study permit fees: $150 CAD, Biometrics fee: $85 CAD.
9. If applying from outside Canada, your child may be required to perform biometrics (fingerprints) and a medical examination. The instructions will come a few days after you submit your online application.
10. For a minor child outside of Canada, once your child’s study permit is issued, you will receive a passport request in your online portal containing instructions on how to send your passport to the nearest Visa center for a visa. Your study permit will be issued at the port of entry to Canada. For minor children within Canada, the study permit will be mailed to your Canadian address.

CAN I RENEW OR EXTEND MY SOWP?
A SOWP is tied to the permit of the spouse, or ‘lead applicant’, and will only be valid for as long as the lead applicant’s permit. If your SOWP expires, but your spouse or partner still has eligible status in Canada, you may re-apply for a new SOWP.

There is no minimum amount of time that an applicant must wait before applying for a permit after getting married.
CAN I ADD MY DEPENDENTS ON MY SOWP APPLICATION?
While applying for a spousal open work permit, dependent children may also accompany the permit holder by applying for a visitor visa. Visitor visa fee per person – $100 CAD, Biometric fee for entire family – $170 CAD.
CAN I TRANSITION FROM SOWP TO PERMANENT RESIDENCY?
There are many options for candidates working in Canada to transition to permanent residence status. The major pathway is the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Click here to know more about CEC.
WHAT HAPPENS IF AN SOWP IS REFUSED?
If your spousal open work permit is refused, you may be eligible to re-apply. You should only re-apply if you can provide additional information or documentation to address the reason or refusal.
I AM IN CANADA ON A VISITOR VISA & APPLIED FOR AN SOWP FROM WITHIN CANADA, CAN I STAY IN CANADA WHILE WAITING FOR MY SOWP TO PROCESS?
If you are currently on a visitor permit that is expiring and you have applied for a spousal open work permit, you will be on maintained status. This means you can remain in Canada without a valid permit under the same conditions while awaiting a decision on your SOWP application.
Visit Canada
Note: This information is free, you do not need to pay for it.
A visit visa to Canada is easy for individuals with adequate home ties, finances, and travel history. For example, a Business owner with lots of assets and finance in his home country may find it easy to obtain a visa to Canada to visit a family, attend an event, or just for tourism.
When applying to visit Canada, you can choose to apply through a family invitation, through an event (such as a conference, sports, musical or family event), or simply apply as a regular tourist. Most successful applicants are usually issued 2-5 year visas, however, you are only permitted to stay for a maximum of 6 months per entry to Canada. Please note that when applying using a family invitation, it does not alleviate your visa requirements (Seen below). You are required to provide the visa requirements, not your inviter.
VISITOR TO WORK PERMIT PROGRAM: If you are highly skilled in an on-demand profession (e.g. Health and ICT), you can use your stay to find an LMIA-based job. With your LMIA-based job offer, you can convert from a visitor visa to a work permit. There is currently a policy by Immigrations Canada (IRCC) that allows you to convert from a Visitor visa to a work permit (upon having an LMIA-based job offer) without leaving Canada. This policy is valid till February 2025. You can read about the policy by clicking here. You can learn more about LMIA by clicking here.
NOTE: If you are unskilled and without any relevant work and academic experience, do not expect to find a job that easily!

You must have traveled to first-world countries such as the USA, The UK, The Schengen area, and Australia. Work Permits to Canada Video
The video below will show you how to apply for a work permit to companies that already have LMIA approved in Canada.
For starters, LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is a paper work that a Canadian employer does which guarantees that hiring a foreign worker will not negatively impact job availability for those already in Canada. When an employer’s LMIA is approved, they are ready to hire employees. Should you be hired, your LMIA job offer allows you to apply for a work permit and immigrate alone or with your family!
